DEERS to Automatically Change Your Marriage Status to Divorce After 18 Months

Citing significant strain on personnel, DEERS announced they’ll be automatically changing your marriage status to “divorced” 18 months after your legal marriage date.

“This will significantly reduce the number of requests our staff has to process,” a DEERS spokesperson put out (unlike your ex-spouse). “Having to correct the records of individuals whose marriage status was inadvertently changed to divorce after 18 months will be far less work than the previous practice of processing divorce requests as they come.”

They also shared that they were working on a pilot program to maintain TRICARE benefits for ex-spouses to avoid processing delays when they inevitably marry another sevicemember in 2-3 months.
